Archive photos show glaciers in retreat in the 1930s

We all know that Greenland's glaciers are melting but satellite images only go back so far making it difficult to compare current changes with those in the past. However, the discovery of photographs from the early 1930s has allowed glaciologists to look further back.

This photograph was amongst a collection of glass plates from Denmark's Rasmussen's 7th Thule Expedition to Greenland eighty years ago. The photographs were taken as reference for a mapping project. Once the map was finished the images were forgotten until they were recently rediscovered in the basement of Denmark's National Survey.

"They were cleaning up in the basement and had found some old glass plates with glaciers on them," says Anders Bj?rk of the Natural History Museum of Denmark. "Once the map was produced they didn't have much value."

Bj?rk and colleagues have been assembling and digitizing historical images of Greenland from various sources and using them to compare glacial melting from then and the 21st century.

The team found that southeast Greenland glaciers that reach the ocean have been retreating faster in the past decade than in the 1930s. However, land-terminating glaciers experienced a faster retreat in the 1930s.

Is Internet Marketing or Network Marketing A Better Way To Make ...

?

I make money doing both Internet marketing and network marketing. The question for a newbie trying to make money online is which way is better? Let?s answer that question.

1. Network marketing. I have found that it?s easier to build an MLM business when you incorporate Internet marketing into it.

The big advantage is in generating real prospects for your business. In the old days of network marketing you had to prospect in person or by phone.

This eliminated most people from ever really sponsoring anyone and building a large downline. Most people were never any good at handing out business cards, prospecting, identifying real prospects, setting an appointment, doing an MLM business presentation, following up, enrolling a new distributor, and teaching them how to do what you just did.

It?s actually amazing to think about people like Mark Yarnell with Nu Skin, Dexter Jaeger with Amway, Jan Rhue with Discovery Toys, and so on were as successful as they were. This is why John Milton Folgg wrote the best-selling MLM book titled ?The Greatest Networker? which is a parable about a young man ready to quit network marketing and what he learns to become successful at it.

In the past so much energy was spent on personal development because this was really the only way the average person was going to improve themselves to the point they would go through this whole process to build their business.

2. Internet marketing. Even with the advantages that the Internet provides most people still will never sponsor more than 1 or 2 people in their downline. The reason for this is using the Internet to build an MLM business takes online marketing skills.

It really doesn?t matter what the business model is. Until you learn how to get traffic to a website you are not going to make money.

Based on this fact network marketing companies are incorporating a lot of training on traffic generation. This can still mean using offline marketing methods with your warm market.

However, in building a meaningful MLM business, you will need to learn how to promote your system of prospecting, sponsoring, and training using the Internet. The exciting thing about this is once you learn how to do it you can be in multiple network marketing businesses at the same time.

You may not be comfortable with that. You might just want to focus on one and building it as large as you can.

However, once you start making money with your first network marketing business, today many Internet marketers will take on a second mlm opportunity. The key to making this work for you is to outsource the traffic generation.

You can still put your personal touch on following up with prospects yourself. But you don?t have to deal with anybody until they are a legitimate prospect. This is why network marketing is a great way to make money when you use Internet marketing to assist you in doing it.

Sperm donors: helping childless couples through sperm donation

Parenthood is a dream of many couples and even before planning a child, some couples even start imagining their life with a baby. However, due to certain infertility disorders among male and female partners, the dream turns into anger, depression, stress, marital problems, sexual dysfunction and social isolation. In general, the infertile women show higher levels of distress than their male partners. Both men and women experience a sense of loss of identity and have pronounced feelings of defectiveness and incompetence. The outcome of infertility treatment may also be influenced by psychological factors. Such level of emotional stress and anxiety can affect the infertility treatment and may not specifically show any result in the treatment.

Infertility can be either due to a male or female partner or probably both the partners.

Depending upon the type of infertility, the treatment given to every couple is also different. For instance if the female bears a healthy reproductive system and the male suffers from a low sperm count or poor motility of sperms, then the method of artificial insemination can be useful. A woman is not required to involve in a sexual intercourse with the sperm donor, but the semen is injected into the uterus of the female partner. This non-sexual clinical method helps in establishing pregnancy in the female?s womb. Apart from sperm donation there are also various other technologies that assist the couples for conceiving depending on the type of infertility.

Men who choose to donate sperm through a sperm bank have the security of knowing that they are helping childless couples to have children in circumstances where they as a biological father does not have any legal rights or duties towards the child produced through their semen. Whether the donor is anonymous or not, the most important factor involves is allowing sperm banks to recruit sperm donors and use their sperms to produce whatever number of pregnancies that can be conducted according to law. These banks also enable a woman to learn about the sex of her child, which can establish a greater control over the way families are planned.

Children born through such method have full right to know about their biological father after the child attains the age of eighteen years. In this regards, the sperm banks makes information available about the sperm donors to enable customers to know about the biological father of their child. The only advantage of using sperms from a licensed clinic or bank is that it has been tested, frozen and quarantined and that this arrangement is legally protected.

Reviving Love Lost in The Festive Season

By Jamilah Samian

?

Family business is funny business. As they say ?Families are like fudge ? mostly sweet with a few nuts.? No matter how perfect someone?s life appears to you (stunning and charming spouse, brilliant children, home is a mansion replete with fast cars, maids and drivers to order), everyone has something. By this I mean, situations which are less than pleasant only known to kith and kin, particularly in terms of relationships. It could mean the family matriarch not being in good terms with a daughter-in-law, or cousins not seeing eye to eye over personal matters. Or a sibling who feels he has always been unfairly treated by another. In some cases, these situations give birth to strained relationships which may lead to avoidance or withdrawal or worse, of one or more of the parties involved.

Interestingly, the festive season is a period when these strained relationships are tested to the full. Particularly because inMalaysia, the festive season is the time when most family members young and old convene. Usually, this is done at the paternal or maternal grandparents? home. Even if the venue is spacious, having several adult children along with their little kids and maids under one roof is not exactly comfortable when everyone knows someone is not on talking terms with someone else. It might mean a sister-in-law quietly getting up to find another spot to sit the moment the in-law she?s having issues with appears in the dining hall. Or one of the adult children checking when his elder brother is arriving and leaving the venue of a family get-together to minimize possible interactions.

I firmly believe that the elders in the family, especially grandparents, can play a crucial role in diffusing potential landmines such as those mentioned above. To be specific, as an elder, you can:

  1. Choose to be a buffer. As an elder, you can play this role ever subtly. For example, your daughter and son have not been talking to each other for months. You know that there?s a dish that they both like and your daughter was supposed to arrive on Sunday and your son, the following day. Cook extra. As your daughter is enjoying the dish the day she arrives, you could gently suggest to her, ?Hmmm ? You brother will be here tomorrow. Shall we keep some for him, dear?? Now, since you have already cooked plenty of that dish (more than your daughter could ever eat), she doesn?t have much choice but to respond with a ?Yes?. Even if it?s a grunt, it?s all you need. Then, when your son arrives, tell him ?Your sister said to keep this for you. She knows it?s your favourite as much as it?s hers.? Believe me, it will help thaw the ice between the two.
  2. Do not compare one family member with another. More than likely, you would have kids who do better than the rest. Never make remarks that highlight this already known fact. Your thirty-year-old son who drives a rundown motorbike and rents a room downtown doesn?t need any reminder that his younger brother who owns three BMWs and resides in a penthouse is much wealthier than him. Such remarks only add to the discord and envy between the two.
  3. Avoid putting anyone on the spot or adding salt to the wound. If you know that two or more family members are at odds with one another, don?t add to their discomfort or to the sourness of their relationship by throwing negative comments or enquiring about the state of their relationships, unless in such a way as to help them feel warmer to each other or to help resolve the conflict.
  4. Appreciate and acknowledge. Some families have a tradition of having potluck dinners to celebrate the festive season. This means that each family contributes a dish to reduce the preparation that the host needs to do. Or, in some other families, the adult children will contribute cakes or cookies to serve guests. It is not unusual to hear remarks made by the elders praising a certain dish / cake / cookies in front of guests / in-laws / other family members while putting down another. How much better if you acknowledge and appreciate each and every contribution made, regardless of how it looks or tastes, as it?s the thought that truly counts.

In Malaysia, the festive season is a time of giving. It?s customary for working adults, for instance, to present angpow or duit raya or pocket money to the younger ones and their elders. Tangible gifts like money, cakes or cookies may be spent and disappear as quickly as they change hands. More ?important, however, is for us to be giving of ourselves in as many intangible ways as we can, to assist in improving broken relationships or enhancing already good ones ? and to leave a legacy in ways that only grandparents and well-respected seniors can.

COLIN MOLD Girl on the Castle Steps music review by tszirmay

5 stars What a fascinating creature this Girl on the castle steps! On the 'Prelude', shimmering halos of ethereal sounds find words wrapped in elegant beauty. No pressure to perform or otherwise impress other than infusing the magical violin into a musical realm that encompasses a glorious past and align it with modern home technology and the result is something beyond magic! The folk sensibility is evident within the strong song based formula espoused by Colin Mold, a musician that understands mood, melody and atmosphere by relying on a profound sense of melancholia, as well as the classic instrumentations that bedeck the legendary British progressive folk music scene. Another of those hidden, unknown gems that is always a thrill to discover, Colin is a music teacher, artist, multi-instrumentalist as well as a new member of Karnataka, one of the UK leading proponents of symphonic female vocalist fronted bands. The Welsh band certainly has a following in Europe and is due for some new release soon. If Mold can add the talent displayed here to that endeavor, it will be a monster!

The suave ripples of the sumptuous 'Green and Gold' carry a breathtaking melody that is achingly attractive, with haunting vocals that recall a more robust Peter Sinfield and lyrics that have obvious emotive oomph! And the violin played on ... Such a pleasure when the stringed beast is given the platform to articulate the most stirring of human emotions.

Folk-based songs like 'Chasing Rainbows', 'Blown Away' and the penultimate track 'Realm of the Fire' all reflect the traditional tradition that is so rooted in Welsh, Brit, Scot and Irish culture. The result is always satisfying as there is always a story to be told.

On the epic opus 'View from the Mountain' the true essence of Mold craft comes into the light, velvety melodies egged by vaporous playing seek to entrance and succeeds doing so by adding ripping electric guitar solos that truly coat this piece with that distinct progginess we all pray for. The orchestrations are luxuriant, theatrical and imposing. His vocals recall a sense of grandeur and urgent that is quite addictive. And the violin played on'.. 'Storm Dance' may be the rockiest tune on the album but it's also the best, a whirling dervish rhythm with insistent guitars and Middle Eastern motifs, delicious piano appearing so eloquently, huge waves of string synths colliding in the background, finalized by bold returns to the main guitar-driven chorus, this is really heavenly stuff! Bookended by some storm effects for good measure! Bravo!

The lyrics are meaningful; the singing is in rapture mode, especially on the majestic 'By the Lake' with its colossal highlight reel chorus whilst the music remains mysterious and grandiose. A song that will sear itself to your brain in no time. And to prove that we are in the presence of something sensational, the title track conspires to steal our hearts with an emotional musical outburst that has all the tools, baby! A brilliant folk based song with utterly gorgeous lyrics and sultry singing, the pleading violin in tow'A slithering, misty guitar solo finishes off this stunning piece. I mean WOW!

The exciting epic finale is 'Ancestral Song' and with that ubiquitous title, the mold (excuse the obvious pun!) is set, we are in the presence of a fantastic artist who deserves wider and immediate recognition. Once again we are falling seduced by a wondrous melody, a gorgeous vocal line and sumptuous playing. Yeah, that darn' violin again, bubba! The material has a melancholic vibe, 'on the headstone of history' he sings but the fluid guitar, the powerful voice and the haunting chorus do the rest. Just exemplary music.

Comparisons are near impossible, as the songs are quite unique and original, there are however , for arguments sake, slight vocal hints of Al Stewart, Justin Hayward, Dave Cousins, Iona, early Chris deBurgh, Ian Broudie of 80s pop band Lightning Seeds and musically, Anthony Phillips. The man has a lush voice, not overbearing but that knows how to resonate (like Greg Lake in the late 60s!). What a lovely package indeed!

Greek euro exit would be a recipe for hardship

(AP) ? As Greece creaks under its untenable debt and a shrinking economy, the possibility that it could stop using the euro is becoming increasingly likely. The effects of such a move would be as quick as they would be brutal for ordinary Greeks, who would essentially take a 50-percent pay cut just as prices soar.

Here's a look at what else could happen:

THE RETURN OF THE DRACHMA

No other country has ever left the 17-country eurozone before and there are no procedures in the EU's vast rulebook that would push any country out. But one fear is that the Greeks could decide to vote in an anti-austerity government on June 17 that may then decide to renege on the terms of the multi-billion-euro bailout which has been keeping the country afloat. Greece could be then forced into a messy exit from the euro bloc. It would then have no choice but to start printing its own currency ? the drachma ? to pay its way.

According to the Greek think tank Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE), such a move would hit the Greek people hard ? and quickly. The new drachma would lose half or more of its value relative to the euro. This would drive up inflation and sap the purchasing power of the average Greek. At the same time, the country's economic output would drop, putting more people out of work where one in five is already unemployed. The prices of imported goods would skyrocket, putting them out of reach for many.

THE DASH FOR CASH

The prospect of Greece leaving the euro and dealing with a devalued drachma has already prompted many people to start withdrawing their euros out of the country's banks.

"Fear has gripped many who are withdrawing their money," said IOBE head of research Aggelos Tsakanikas.

Although the latest bank deposit figures aren't yet available, Greek President Karolos Papoulias last week said about ?700 million ($898 million) in deposits was taken out of banks the week after the May 6 election. What's more, according to central bank data, Greek banks have been hemorrhaging money for almost three years now ? from a high of ?237.8 billion ($302.5 billion) worth of deposits in Sept. 2009 down to ?165.3 billion ($210.3 billion) in March this year.

A victory for anti-bailout lawmakers in the June 17 election would likely trigger an even bigger bank run, said Dimitris Mardas, associate professor of economics at the University of Thessaloniki. Greek authorities, Mardas predicts, would respond by imposing controls on the movement of money for as long as it takes for the panic to subside.

WHAT ABOUT HOMES AND SAVINGS?

As the new drachma quickly loses its value against other currencies, ordinary Greeks' savings and pensions will shrink just as rapidly. Analyst Vangelis Agapitos estimates that inflation under the new drachma would quickly reach 40 to 50 percent to catch up with the fall in the new currency's value. This would make everything much more expensive.

"People are going to need five times the amount of money they would have needed to purchase something," Agapitos said.

To stop the falling value of the drachma, interest rates would have to be increased to as high as 30 to 40 percent, according to Agapitos. People will then be unable to pay off their loans and mortgages and the country's banks would have to be nationalized to stop them from going under, he predicts.

FEW BENEFITS FOR BUSINESS

Some Greeks believe quitting the euro would boost the country's economy as a devalued drachma would make Greek exports cheaper.

But Constantine Michalos, president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry, says Greece doesn't have a strong enough export-oriented economy to take advantage of a devalued currency. The country currently imports twice as much as it exports.

"Without any real heavy industry, the Greek economy can't exploit this advantage," Michalos said. "Our main industry is tourism, but in a chaotic situation, which tourist would choose to come to Greece right after the country goes back to the drachma?"

To get its international bailouts, Greece had to embark on a series of economic and market reforms such as reducing a bloated public sector and cutting red tape. Agapitos warns that if Greece dumps the euro, the incentive to carry out these reforms would evaporate, hurting Greece's competitiveness.

GETTING IT ON THE BLACK MARKET

A drachma that is dwindling in value means that even basic, foreign-produced goods such as medicines or fuel will cost much more. Almost inevitably, a thriving black market would emerge, taking more steam out of the economy just as bank loans become much more difficult to pay off.

Vangelis, a 58-year-old former customs official who didn't want to give his full name, worried that going back to the drachma would return Greece to the abject poverty of 1940s when it was under Nazi occupation.

"We'll be paying half our salary for a can of olive oil ... Greeks can't be thinking about returning to the drachma. It would be a catastrophe, a catastrophe," Vangelis said.

TURNING TO A LIFE OF CRIME?

With all the pain a drachma-based economy would induce, IOBE head of research Aggelos Tsakanikas foresees an increase in crime as people struggle to pay bills. "We won't see tanks in the streets and violence, we won't see people starving in the streets, but crime could very well rise," he said.

Others reject the apocalyptic scenarios altogether, saying Greeks will fall back on their resourcefulness to overcome hard times and lend a hand to those less well off.

"The way things are now, it can't get any worse," says Athens resident Tasos Schinas, 37. "Sure, the transition to the drachma will be difficult (but) average people will find a way to survive, many will probably go back to the village and start growing produce ... We just won't go back to the lifestyle we've led all this time."

Agapitos, the analyst, thinks that attitude is too cavalier.

"Desperate people do desperate things, but I can't predict what will happen," he said. "There will be rage and people will want to vent it but it may not be done in a civilized way."

So much for open source webOS: HP?s core Enyo team goes to Google

The main coders working on HP?s Enyo? ? the HTML5 application framework first seen in the HP TouchPad ? have jumped ship and are headed to Google, the Verge reports.

This puts a huge dent in HP?s plan to open source webOS, which admittedly was weak from the start. HP only announced that it was opening up webOS after it failed to find a suitable buyer. We reported that HP tried to sell its Palm assets for $1.2 billion ? the same price it initially paid for them.

Sources tell the Verge that the departing crew wrote ?99 percent of the code? for Enyo, and that also includes Matt McNulty, who headed the Enyo team. HP planned to release the first version of Open webOS later this year, but without the Enyo folks I can?t really see that happening. (In a statement to the Verge, HP said everything was on schedule.)

HP announced earlier this week that it?s laying off 27,000 employees ? which likely gave the Enyo crew the impetus to move on.

The news doesn?t mean that we?ll start seeing great webOS design influences and features in Android. The Enyo team was instead focused on making it easier for developers to create apps for the platform. It?s still unclear where they?ll end up at Google, but it will likely be either the Android team (though Android apps are built in Java, not HTML5) or Google Chrome (which could use a robust HTMl5 app framework).

Microsoft announces Robotics @Home contest winner: a SmartTripod that can follow you

Microsoft announces Robotics @Home contest winner

It's had quite a run, but Microsoft's months-long Robotics @Home Competition finally came to close this past weekend at the Bay Area Maker Faire. Taking home the title (and a $10,000 prize) was Arthur Wait for his SmartTripod, a robotic assistant that relies on Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio 4, the Eddie development platform and, of course, a Kinect to follow a person around and handle camera duties in a natural manner -- or "almost as though a human was holding the camera," as Wait puts it. Just how well does it work? You can get a look at the robot itself and the results it's able to provide in the videos after the break.

GAO: Small businesses say tax credit isn't worth the effort

Kyle Cheney writes on Plolitico.com ? ?The Obama administration wildly missed the mark when it estimated that up to 4 million small businesses would take advantage of a health care premium tax credit created in the Affordable Care Act, according to a GAO report released Monday.

Just 170,300 businesses applied for the credit in 2010, and most of those didn?t seek the maximum amount allowed, the GAO found, in part because most small employers don?t offer health insurance.

But another factor was that the credit was too small and the criteria too complex to lure small businesses to apply, according to tax preparers, insurance brokers and company officials who met with GAO.

?While some small employers could be eligible for the credit if they began to offer health insurance, small business group representatives and discussion group participants told us that the credit may not offset costs enough to justify a new outlay for health insurance premiums,? according to the report.

Republicans pounced on the news to paint the ACA as an unworkable and confusing thicket of regulation.

?The failure of these small business tax credits goes to the heart of what?s wrong with ObamaCare:? it?s confusing, expensive, and burdensome for the families and businesses that have to comply with it,? U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said in a statement. ?It?s no surprise that the very part of the law that the White House said would help small businesses is, in fact, too difficult and complex for small businesses to take advantage of ? and that?s before the worst parts of the law for America?s job creators come into effect.?

In April 2010, the White House trumpeted estimates by Obama?s Council of Economic Advisers that found up to 4 million small businesses would be eligible to take advantage of the tax credit.

The credit, which became available immediately upon the law?s passage in 2010, offers to support up to 35 percent of small businesses? premiums to provide health care to workers. That support is due to rise to 50 percent in 2014. Obama administration officials said at the time they expected the provision to save up to $40 billion for small businesses by 2019.

To be eligible for the credit, employers are required to employ fewer than 25 full-time equivalent workers in the tax year they apply, pay average wages of less than $50,000 a year, and pay at least 50 percent of their employees? premiums.

Paul Ratner: 10 App Ideas to Transform Culture

One prerogative of people who opine online is their ability to pontificate on how they can do things better than [insert person/activity here]. So here is my list of phone app ideas that can transform culture. These don't exist yet as far as I know. Maybe some of these are brewing already in some app maven's mind, and I hope this type of brainstorming can inspire someone out there to make these apps a reality. There are so many useless things we can already do with our phones, why not try doing something that can change our lives and make it a more interesting world for all?

World is a Stage app -- a twist on flash mobs -- app connects people who'll get together briefly and interact with each other not as themselves but as characters of their choosing. You'll be able to create characters within the app and include all relevant info so that people may be able to invite you to join private gatherings. Let's say you want to pretend to be a lawyer or an army guy or a top chef -- just create your identity within the app (which will guide you with helpful questions) and meet up with others with pretend identities and have yourself a great time out from your life!

Dumb Your Phone app -- helps you fight the addiction to your smartphone. Basically deactivates your phone for a full 24 hours. Once you activate the app, you won't be able to use your phone no matter what you do (only resetting and wiping all data can restart it before the 24 hours are through).

Culturize Yourself app -- gives you cultural/historical highlights of places right next to you, allowing you to quickly have an intelligent-sounding conversation with anyone you might be with (and need to impress). Great for dates.

Change the World app -- the app will do to changing the world what "American Idol" does to [not sure what AI does]. App allows people to vote on the most pressing world problem and concrete proposals on how to fix them (illustrated by an attractive spokesperson). Each vote costs you 5 cents and all the submitted money is collected in a pool. The winning problem/proposal gets the funding and matching funds from corporate sponsors. An implementation deadline is attached to every proposal so actual changes can be tracked.

Talk to Aliens app -- allows you to talk to Aliens. You can send messages (or confessions) to aliens on a planet of your choice. A powerful transmitter run by the app producer or NASA-like agency broadcasts the messages. App can be used to raise financing for space programs. Will the aliens ever respond? We won't know till we do this. There's been a certain highfalutin assumption that aliens would love to hear Bach or some great accomplishment of our civilization but it's just as likely they'll respond to ramblings of a teenage girl.

Stop Cursing and Be Nice app -- promotes civility in everyday life. Rewards you for being nice and courteous to others. You can track how many greetings you've made or "thanks" you've said throughout the day. Also tracks your swear words. The best implementation would be for the app to be able to do a voice analysis on the data passing through the phone to pick out the nice words. Nicest people will get financial rewards from sponsors -- coupons, deals, public recognition. The worst offenders will get higher phone bills and public shame.

Get Off Drugs app -- does what it says. Helps people with drug problems to get off drugs with functions like allowing them track their progress of decreasing drug usage (with a reward-based system that gives them financial or social benefits for decreased drug use). Shows their location and heartbeat info to sponsors, connects them with other people near them who are having the same challenges. Shows pictures and videos of addicted people's demise due to drug use.

Learn a Poem a Day app -- helps you memorize a poem a day. Gives you tools and rewards to help with the memorization. Great for increasing your cultural and romantic potency.

Pavlov's Dog app -- not what you might first think -- this is an app that can turn you into a dog. Good for people who want a break from being human. Leads you through activities a typical dog might engage in. You do each one for a specific time length as your phone takes pics and puts online. Works best if utilized near other users of app or an actual dog or instead of group yoga at your company. The idea can be expanded to simulating behavior of other animals. Can also call it DOG OUT as in "let's have a DOGOUT for the next fifteen minutes"...

Laugh at People Next to You app -- admittedly this probably doesn't have any positive transformative effects but wouldn't it be nice some times to snap a pic of someone you just find looking silly or doing something goofy and put it up for everyone else to gander at and perhaps rate (there being awards for goofiest person of the day etc)?

Google to notify users infected with DNSChanger trojan

Google is embarking on an effort to notify Internet users if their computers or home routers are still infected with the DNSChanger Trojan, a piece of sophisticated malware that has compromised an estimated 500,000 systems. The outreach campaign comes a little more than a month ahead of July 9, the date on which the FBI is set to take all computers corrupted with the malware offline.

If your computer is among the affected crop, Google will alert you via special messages that will appear at the top of search results, reading, "Your computer appears to be infected," Google security engineer Damian Menscher explained in a May 22 blog post. Google's hope is to directly warn as many as 500,000 affected users within the week, although Menscher admitted, "We realize we won't reach every affected user."

If your computer shows signs of DNSChanger corruption, you will receive, along with the notification, recommendations from Google as to how to purge the malware from your devices. Although Google cannot guarantee its tips will fully excise the Trojan, Menscher said, "If more devices are cleaned and steps are taken to better secure the machines against further abuse, the notification effort will be well worth it."

[Will the FBI Shut Down My Computer? Questions and Answers]

The fear surrounding DNSChanger, and the possibility that people would lose their Internet access, began last November, when the FBI's "Operation Ghost Click" took down an Estonian cybercrime ring that had infected 4 million computers and routers worldwide (and at least 500,000 computers in the U.S.) with the Trojan.

DNSChanger (DNS is short for Domain Name System) enabled the crooks to hijack Web traffic and reroute it to compromised sites under their control, a process from which they netted $14 million in fraudulent advertising revenue.

Following the November bust, the FBI set up temporary DNS "surrogate" servers to keep the systems infected with the dangerous malware online while they were scrubbed of the malicious software. On March 5, a federal judge granted the government 120 days to keep the proxy servers running; a subsequent order pushed the deadline back to July 9.

If the Google alert tells you that your computer or router is affected, there are three things you need to do.

First, you'll have to change some technical settings on your computer. Click here for instructions on how to do so. That will make sure you still have Internet access when the fateful day comes.

The second thing to do will be to update and run strong anti-virus software? that will clean up your machine, because these particular malware infections are pretty nasty. You'll probably have to pay for the software. Here's a list of recommended anti-virus software.

The third step is to check it again once you've done the first two. If you're still seeing the Google alert, check the DNS Changer Check-Up.

If that's red, your router may be infected. Check the manufacturer's website for a firmware update. At worst, you may have to buy a new router.
