TechCrunch ? MOG has been making headlines this week because of their potential acquisition by Taiwanese phone manufacturer HTC, but their newest announcement sadly doesn?t mention anything of the like. Instead, the popular on-demand music service has finally pushed out a a version of their desktop player for the Windows-running masses. ~ The move seems to have come just in time too ? some of the MOG natives have been getting restless lately. I can?t say I blame them, as MOG has long since released applications for OS X, iOS, Android, not to mention their appearances in a few cars. ~ Heck, MOG first announced that they had a Windows version of the application in the works way back in September when they first released their Mac client. Such a tease! ~ Joking aside, Windows fans hoping ...More for a few extra features to make their seven month wait worthwhile may come away a little disappointed ? this new Windows build packs all the same features the Mac version (except for support for a remote control). Still full support for AirPlay, keyboard shortcuts, and the ability to play music at a 320 kbps bitrate is nothing to sneeze at when you?ve only ever been able to fiddle with the service through a web browser. ~ If you?re a Windows-devoted MOG user you?ve probably already taken the plunge, but the client can be downloaded here in case you?ve yet to get your groove on. ...Less |

GigaOM ? For past week or so, there have been rumors that MOG, the digital music subscription story has been been sold to HTC Corp., the Taiwanese mobile phone maker. Business Insider first reported the rumor and later AllThingsD confirmed that they too had heard similar talk. Our Janko Roettgers confirmed that indeed the two companies had indeed swapped term sheets. ...More ~ HTC, which had acquired a substantial stake in Jimmy Iovine?s Beats Audio, has been planning to launch its own music service for a while. I had reported earlier this year that the company was in the process of launching its own music operation, likely at the Mobile World Congress. Well, it seems building the music platform isn?t that easy, and that explains why it has been interested in MOG. So the big question is how much did MOG get sold for? ~ Sources close to the company say that MOG was sold for a shade under $12 million ? peanuts compared to the $25 million it raised in venture capital. The really low price also indicates that the company might have lost traction in the market place. MOG founder and CEO David Hyman has recently said that the company had 500,000 active users. However, the US launch of Spotify (with the blessings of Facebook) has acted as a quicksand for its rivals including the likes of MOG. ~ The low price being paid for the company shows that HTC might be interested in buying the software platform more so than the agreements with record labels, which are typically not easily transferable to buyers. Buying a ready made platform only accelerates HTC?s time to market. ~ In another bit of music industry intrigue, two well placed sources familiar with Spotify say that the company is raising a big round of funding at a valuation of between $3.5 billion to $4 billion. Spotify has recently launched in Germany and Ireland. It will soon launch in Australia as well as they race to go global. Spotify has more than three million paying users. ~ Related research and analysis from GigaOM Pro: ~ Subscriber... ...Less spotify : mog : htc : allthingsd : the-insider :Other sources

SlashGear ? MOG is finally releasing a native app for Windows desktop users. The popular music streaming service has long had apps for OS X, iOS, and Android, but Windows users ...More have had to rely on accessing the player via the web browser. The announcement comes just as the company is in the spotlight for a possible merge with HTC and Beats Audio. ~ The MOG for Windows app has an interface similar to its browser-based version but with the extra features that have been available to the Mac version. It has built-in support for AirPlay that lets you stream music to any AirPlay-capable speaker and it can play native 320kbps audio, which MOG claims is the highest of any music service. The Windows version doesn?t support the use of a remote control. ~ Recent reports have suggested a potential acquisition of MOG by Taiwanese phone manufacturer HTC, which has already invested and partnered with Beats Audio for its smartphones. This news has helped MOG steal some of the spotlight from rival music service Spotify and may help it gain more traction.
