Larry Page: Facebook 'doing a bad job on their products'

Google CEO Larry Page covers a lot of ground in a new interview with Wired's Steven Levy, but we were struck most by his poke at Facebook:

"Yeah, they're a company that's strong in that space," he says. "But they're also doing a really bad job on their products. For us to succeed, is it necessary for some other company to fail? No. We're actually doing something different."

Sadly, Page doesn't elaborate on what products he's not impressed with. The interview was conducted before this week's introduction of Graph Search, in which Facebook began what may well be an attempt to encroach on Google's core business.

In any case, Page says Google's social-networking effort, Google+, still has plenty of room to grow, noting accurately that search too was a crowded space when Google got into that market.

"I think it's outrageous to say that there's only space for one company in these areas," he told Levy. "When we started with search, everyone said, 'You guys are gonna fail, there's already five search companies.' We said, 'We are a search company, but we're doing something different.' That's how I see all these areas."

If nothing else, Page's comments put added pressure on the Google+ team to deliver some big wins in 2013. It's easy to call your competitors' products bad, but it raises expectations for your own. And with Google+ still struggling to escape punch line status, now might not be the best time to invite heightened scrutiny.

Putin signs antiadoption law, throwing pending adoptions into confusion (+video)

About 1,000 Russian children were adopted by US families in 2011, and around 50 such adoptions are pending.

By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / December 28, 2012

Orphan children play in their bedroom at an orphanage in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don December 19. A bill banning Americans from adopting Russian children went to President Vladimir Putin for his signature on December 26, 2012 after winning final approval from parliament in retaliation for a U.S. law that targets Russian human rights abusers.

The mood among workers in the almost 40 Russia-accredited adoption agencies, which?have survived repeated bouts of political tensions and ever-tightening regulations over the years,?was near despair Friday.

"We have two cases of adoption in court and we're just asking ourselves the same question, what will be next?" says Lyudmila Babich, of the Cold Spring, New York-based Happy Families Center.

"We have no text of this law, nor any explanations of what's supposed to happen now. So, we're waiting," she says.

Any hope that Mr. Putin might impose some restraint upon a measure that even members of his own cabinet have criticized?as possibly illegal and diplomatically disruptive were dashed Thursday when Putin explicitly endorsed the adoption ban and other tough measures against US citizens working in Russia in televised remarks.

"I see no reason not to sign the law," Putin said.

He added that he would also sign a presidential decree to improve procedures for adopting Russian orphans and abandoned children domestically, and also boost measures to help children with serious disabilities and health problems ? who were previously the major pool of orphans made available for foreign adoption.

About 1,000 Russian children were adopted by US families in 2011, down from the annual average of 3,000 or so in the past decade, and only a small portion of the 120,000 Russian children who are considered eligible for adoption. Under Russian law, a child can be offered to prospective foreign parents only after having been rejected three times by Russian families.

Framed as 'selling' children

Russian nationalists argue that it's a shame for Russian children to be "sold" abroad, and several of the lawmakers who championed the Dima Yakovlev bill argued they will sponsor further efforts to ease the plight of Russia's huge numbers of institutionalized children.

Putin lent his support to the harshest critics of international adoption Thursday, by casually likening Russian children taken into US families to economic refugees.

"There are probably many places in the world where living standards are higher than ours. So what, are we going to send all our children there?" Putin said with sarcasm. "Maybe we should move there ourselves?"?

Duke Olympian divers Abby Johnson and Nick McCrory thrive in the college waters

Among the Duke swimmers and divers receiving roses Saturday on the athletic deck of Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion was Abby Johnston, the Duke diver who returned from the 2012 Olympic Games in London this summer with a silver medal around her neck. Duke lost to South Carolina in the dual meet, but the steamy Saturday also marked Senior Day for the Blue Devils. Johnston would have been a senior last year, but took off for training and returned with an Olympic silver medal in synchronized 3-meter...

Obama vows vigorous effort to implement new gun measures

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said on Monday that he would formally present this week a list of "sensible, common sense steps" to reduce gun violence from Vice President Joe Biden and vowed to work vigorously to implement them.

Though the proposals have not been made public, a rough outline of what the president hopes to pursue is clear. Obama reiterated that he would support reinstating a ban on assault weapons, stricter controls on high-capacity ammunition clips, and stronger background checks.

Biden and other members of Obama's cabinet have held a series of meetings with officials in the weapons and entertainment industry as part of a task force requested by the president after the December 14 school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, in which 20 children and six adults were killed.

Obama, who has said the day of the shooting was the worst of his presidency, told reporters at a news conference that some of the proposals would require legislation while others could be accomplished without congressional approval.

"I'm confident that there are some steps that we can take that don't require legislation and that are within my authority as president," Obama said. "And where you get a step that has the opportunity to reduce the possibility of gun violence, then I want to go ahead and take it."

Obama is scheduled to meet with Biden and other advisers involved in crafting the proposals on Monday. Biden had said he expected to submit his ideas by Tuesday, so the president's remarks indicated an even more accelerated schedule than the already hurried pace Biden's team has followed to date.

A White House official said the president would present his "plan for moving forward" later in the week, but declined to pinpoint a day.

The president suggested that changes to how data on guns used by criminals is gathered and tracked could be made through an administrative action.

APPEAL TO CONSCIENCE

Obama acknowledged that some of the legislative proposals could have trouble getting through Congress, but he appealed to lawmakers to listen to their conscience once the legislative process begins.

"Members of Congress, I think, are going to have to have a debate and examine their own conscience," he said.

"If in fact - and I believe this is true - everybody across party lines was as deeply moved ... as I was by what happened in Newtown, then we're going to have to vote based on what we think is best. We're going to have to come up with answers that set politics aside."

There is opposition in both major parties to restricting the access and availability of guns, although Republicans, who control the House of Representatives, traditionally are seen as being more resistant to such efforts.

Obama, a Democrat who won re-election in November, said gun enthusiasts would be hard-pressed to say his administration had infringed on their constitutional right to bear arms, and he said gun control opponents were responsible for stoking concerns that had led to long lines at gun stores.

"Those who oppose any common sense gun control or gun safety measures have a pretty effective way of ginning up fear on the part of gun owners that somehow the federal government's about to take all your guns away," he said.

"Those of us who look at this problem have repeatedly said that responsible gun owners, people who have a gun for protection, for hunting, for sportsmanship, they don't have anything to worry about."

China: Chinese workers abducted in Sudan's Darfur

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) ? China's Foreign Ministry says four Chinese workers have been abducted in Sudan's North Darfur region by unidentified gunmen.

Monday's statement says the men are employees of the China Railway 18th Bureau Group who were building a road in North Darfur just outside the regional capital of El-Fasher.

Sudan's state news agency SUNA has blamed the abduction on a Darfur rebel movement, but it stopped short of naming which group.

The news agency has reported that five Sudanese were also abducted along with the four Chinese workers, among them drivers and engineers.

The government says it dispatched 18 military vehicles to pursue the abductors.

China is a major oil buyer from Sudan and invests heavily there.
