Oracle releases patch for Java

Oracle says it has released a fix for the flaw in its Java software that raised an alarm from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security last week.

Late Thursday, the federal agency recommended that Internet users disable Java software in Web browsers to avoid potential hacking attacks.

Java allows programs to run within websites and powers some advertising networks. Users who disable Java may not be able to see portions of websites that display real-time data such as stock tickers, news, weather updates and ads.

Oracle said the patch was released Sunday. The company recommends that users update Java immediately. The patch sets Java's default security level to "high" so it prompts users and gives them a chance to decline malicious software before it loads onto their computers.

Apple falls with iPhone demand

Apple shares declined to the lowest price in 11 months after the Nikkei newswire reported that production of the iPhone was cut on weak demand.

Apple shares closed Monday at $501.75, down 3.6 percent. It was the lowest share price since February 2011, and down more than $200 from its record close of $702.10 in September.

Apple ordered about half the 65 million iPhone 5 displays it originally estimated for this quarter, Nikkei said, citing an unnamed executive at a component maker.

Manufacturing curbs have been widely known since December, according to Steven Milunovich and Mark Moskowitz, analysts at UBS and JPMorgan Chase, respectively.

Last month, Apple cut production by about 30 percent, which may be the result of inventory rebalancing or lower consumer demand, Milunovich wrote in a research report Monday.

Order cuts may also be due to suppliers becoming more adept at building the latest iPhone, reducing the need for Apple to order excess parts, Moskowitz noted.

Fire at Chevron refinery Sunday

A fire Sunday at Chevron Corp.'s El Segundo (Los Angeles County) refinery, California's largest, reportedly damaged equipment associated with the plant's fluid catalytic cracker.

The blaze, which ignited at around 6 p.m., damaged the selective catalytic reduction plant, a unit that removes particulates from gas produced by the catalytic cracker, which processes vacuum gas oil into gasoline or lighter crude products.

The El Segundo refinery can process 279,000 barrels of feedstock a day. It supplies 40 percent of the jet fuel to Los Angeles International Airport and 20 percent of the region's gasoline, according to the San Ramon energy giant.

Tesoro finishes repairs at plant

Tesoro Corp.'s Golden Eagle refinery in Martinez has completed repairs to a fuel converter unit and is expected to return it to full operation within in two to three days, a person with direct knowledge of the work said.

The unit, known as a hydrocracker, was shut Friday to unclog piping and was prepared for restarting Monday, said the person. A spokeswoman at the company's headquarters in San Antonio declined to comment on the unit's status.

The Golden Eagle refinery reportedly can process 170,000 barrels of feedstock a day. It refines crude from Alaska, California and foreign sources. The plant reported a "major unit shutdown" on Friday in a filing with Contra Costa County regulators.

Another Summer salad to add to my ever growing collection.. nothing better than a really good wholesome salad in the heat of Summer I reckon. Salad?s are so quick and easy, not to mention fresh and nutritious ? it?s an easy way to get a dinner meal out of the way so you aren?t stuck in the kitchen for over an hour at the end of a busy day
Ingredients:
- 1 can of lentils, drained and rinsed twice
- 2 good handfuls of baby spinach, rinsed
- 1/2 a spanish onion, sliced into thin wedges
- 1/2 a punnet of grape or cherry tomatos, sliced in half
- 1 small block of traditional haloumi, sliced into 5mm slices
- 1 lemon, sliced into wedges
- olive oil
- salt and pepper

1. Place the lentils, onion and tomatoes into a bowl. Season well with salt and pepper and a good dash of olive oil and set aside.
2. Fry the haloumi until golden brown and a little bit crispy.
3. Add the haloumi and baby spinach and use your hands to toss.
4. Squeeze two lemon wedges over the top and serve immediately with more lemon wedges aside.

- Serves 4 as a side salad and 2 as a main meal. Great aside lamb seasoned with my middle eastern spice mix.

Mobile multiplayer games: Own XMPP server vs PubNub/Google App Engine etc

I'm evaluating the best server-side options for turn-based mobile games that work in near real-time. Presuming the authoritative game server which matches users and creates channels is already there, what would be the best solution for inter-player communication?

In my case, it's always 2-8 players on one channel and during the game, they only need to communicate between each other. So if one player makes a move, all other players on their channel must be notified about that move.

Solution A: PubNub

First, I took a look at PubNub, which offers a product called "Galaxy", and that seems to be exactly what is needed for such a multiplayer online game. Unfortunately, regarding the pricing, I could roughly have 250 users playing per hour for $50. Expensive! But we don't want to talk about the money here, of course.

This leads me to solution B, which is XMPP.

Solution B: XMPP

I just thought: Isn't XMPP capable of all these things as well? PubSub support, channels, and so on. For the same 250 users per hour, one server will be enough. And when using seasoned server software such as Openfire, building that features won't be that much work, will it?

This is what I actually want to discuss here: Using Openfire/ejabberd, can't you build that necessary PubSub features for MMOs with a reasonable amount of work?

Solution C: Google AppEngine

What about Google AppEngine replacing the owned XMPP server? As pointed out here, it seems possible. However, all players would need their own JID which cannot be created on the AppEngine space - true? I think their XMPP product would be more useful than the channel API.

Solution D: WebSockets

I've actually discarded that idea because of connectivity problems (especially in mobile) and a premature standard.

Chicago man accused of spitting on agent

CHICAGO (AP) ? A Chicago man has been charged with spitting on a Secret Service agent who was guarding President Barack Obama's home last month.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports (http://bit.ly/VEHgVT ) that Kevin Lawrence is accused of spitting into the agent's vehicle on Dec. 29 outside the Chicago home, hitting the agent in the face and neck. He's charged with aggravated battery of a peace officer.

The 46-year-old Lawrence is jailed on $50,000 bail. Cook County Jail records show he was booked Sunday. The records don't list an attorney for him.

His next court date is Friday.

We do have some fairly extreme weather here, and the last three years have been wet, making hazard reduction burns difficult. Now we have lots of fuel and this summer is dry and hot. As the temperature rises, the relative humidity falls and the fine fuels dry out in less than an hour. Then you have a very large fuel load with the fine fuels (grass, twigs, leaves) acting like tinder. All you need then is an ignition source and high winds and you have a major problem.
